help i'm new & lost!

all i'm trying to find out is why my computer 'box' (for lack of knowing what you call it) is running all the time. it may stop for a few minutes (1 or 2) but starts running again. this goes on all the time. wheather you are using the computer or not. one problem i think it is is that it stays on all the time. my son sayas it won't hurt it at all but i think it needs to be turned off sometimes. can anyone help? why does it run all the time, and can you leave it on all the time? also where do i go to find the answers to this question. i have no clue. thanks so much!

You are using a dialup modem connection which depending on the quality of the phone line may be running at 33kilo bits per sec or if you have a V92 modem may be running at just over 40kbs. Dialup line rarely ever reach 56kbs unless you live virtually next door to the telephone exchange/switch.

When I used diapup I was lucky to get connections at 51kbps as I do live close to an exchange.

So, in answer to your question, yes downloads take forever on a dialup line.

I don't know where you live but it is worth investigating the availablity of Broadband connections in your area.
