Updating your Virus software is a must. Alot of people dont know that new virus's come out and if you havent updated you virus software then it may not detect a virus.

Myself I like Bitdefender, thats what we run on our network. It updates every hour and does a great job. Mcafee I don't like.. Symantec is good, a little heavy on the system resources, avast is good too. The others I don't have experience with.

What will be a better one firewall I can download and use for free, that will come with my windows xp and won't slow it down?

A good free firewall that I know of is pctools firewall, PC Tools Firewall Plus - Free Personal Firewall for Windows® . As I said it is free and does a decent job.
