FIX: Selective Suspend Does Not Work on Video Capture Devices That Use the Stream Class Driver


SYMPTOMS
If a universal serial bus (USB) video capture device that uses the stream.sys class driver is idle, and if the system later shuts off the device, the device cannot start again when its services are required. As a result, the program that is trying to use the video capture device may stop responding.
CAUSE
This problem was introduced in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 as a result of a modification that was made to the stream class driver. A change was made to prevent communications to devices that were idle by blocking input/output request packet (IRP) processing. However, the implementation did not take into account selective suspend functionality. Selective suspend IRPs must not be blocked in this manner.
RESOLUTION
This hotfix contains changes to the stream class driver that allows the driver to correctly process the selective suspend IRPs so that the device can start when a program requires the device to start.

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix.
