So the draconian admins of the schools network have blocked incoming port 3389, from what I can tell. I enabled my router to port forward 3389 and all is well if my laptop (connecting to my desktop) is on my own network. But if I put my laptop on a different network and try to access remote desktop, no luck. I've also allowed port 3389 in zonealarms (to the best of my knowledge). After some snooping around, it appears port 21 is open (at least, the pings reach my desktop and I get a zonealarm warning). Normally this is FTP but I'd like to set it up so that an incoming port 21 gets forwarded to port 3389 - unfortunately, my router can't do this (Netgear WGT624). Is there some software way to do this, or another way for me to be able to use remote desktop?

The best thing to do to get around this setting is to change your RDP port on your desktop machine via a registry edit.

You can change this to some other port number such as 3390,3391, etc.. or you can use a higher port number such as 55551

Then you can configure your router to forward whatever port you have set up on your desktop to point to your desktop pc for RDP.

Also when you change your rdp port when you remote in you'll use your IP:port number so for an example:

192.168.2.23:55551 (if that is the port you are using) Change the 192.x.x.x to your external IP if you are connecting from a remote location or you can use your local IP address if you are in the internal network.
