have considerd macs on a few occasions, but i cannot justify the high cost of their hardware or software.

what i do see in the future as all processors run on the same RISC lines as the motorola chips do in a mac, is the blurring of the edges in terms of applications, especially if linux really gets a hold of the market, basically you would have a PC with a RISC cpu running linux, which is, really what a mac is...

i have a few people who swear by their macs, and a few people who swear at their macs, i am not as convinced that macs are any better then pc's although i do like the desings featuresthey have, although in the long run seem gimmicky and can be very costly to repair, again though, manufactureres do not ecpect us to own things for more then 5 years these days anyway, so they design them with that lifespan in mind

yea, the macs have a really nice design and the fact that the monitor is built into the computer itself. they are nice that no one bothers to try to make viruses for them since no one really uses them and you wouldn't do much damage

that us a macs biggest downfall you have to get their equipment or it will not work, they started out like that and found it a mistake then they went all industry standard for a while now they are going back to OEM stuff....

Actually, Macs are really easy to upgrade. I own an iMac G5 and I did the memory upgrades and wireless networking card install myself. Also, there are ways around apple's need for apple only products. I just recently set up an external DVD burner that is not apple supported, and it works like a dream.

I used PCs, windows based of all flavors from 3.1 to XP, and I find the OS X system much easier, more stable, and less prone to crashes than the windows systems.

I've built 6 of my own PCs x86 based machines, so I know them pretty well inside and out.

My one gripe with Apple is the high prices, but the student discounts are quite good, and being as I am a cinema student, there is nothing other than a Mac that I can use to edit video at the level I need to for my courses.

My original all-in-one Mac had only one PCI slot so yes, was not very upgradeable. However I managed to use cheap USB/Firewire combo card sold to me by some Taiwanese importer.Definitely not MAC card. I managed to run an external Firewire burner and a Microsoft intellimouse on an SCSII computer. That is .. after the internal Yamaha burner that I had replaced the original internal Apple CD_ROM with decided to fail after years of service. I also inserted a much larger IBM HD(coz 4 gig wasn't enough).

Lots of people use macs, and lots of people have tried to make viruses for them, but everything on a mac that is important is password protected, so it is hard for a virus to get through.

By the way, I use a Mac G4 Tower!

Im being completely honest. I never got a thing and on top of that I never used virus protection. When I booted up my new G5 I did not install anything. We will see how long I can go without getting anything this time.

to be fair, and to ask a quick question, if you do not install any anti virus protection how can you be sure that you are not infected (even with a PC virus, it would not of course harm your system, but would still be present), as you would not have any means to scan for a virus?

I've had Virex installed for the life of the computers I have owned.
Even when i was young and stupid in the era of computing.. Back when i actually did get two viruses at once .., by dabbling where I shouldn't have been..
Virex told me about it and told me to go for a walk while it checked my whole HD.. and repaired the issue .. So i went for a walk and bought a six pack.. All was fixed when I returned.
