Hi Pete, load IE and click on Tools -> Internet Options. Then click on Advanced and look down the list of options. In the 'Browsing' section look for an entry regarding reporting script erros and make sure it is set to disabled or ignore script errors. Close IE and restart it and see if that clears it.
Also
Make sure your ActiveX controls are set as follows:
Go to Internet Options - Security - Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options (Download signed and
unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX
controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

On a separate note, it is not a good idea to using Windows 98 especially when accessing the Internet. Windows 98 is not supported by Microsoft and there are only the original windowsupdates available from a few years back. Also, you are limited to Internet Explorer 6 which also suffers from security holes.
Now if the spec for your PC is good enough you may want to consider getting a newer version of Windows. XP is no longer on sale so you are looking at going for Windows 7. Vista is basically dead in the water.
If you'd like to post your machine spec here we'll be able to advise whether or not this is a possibilitty. The key specs are:
Make & model of PC if known - otherwise
Processor model and speed e.g. Pentium 4 1.8ghz
Chipset
Size of main memory
Disc size
and anyother useful info.
If you don't know how to gather this info you can get a free program to do this for you. Go to
CPUID and download CPU-Z 1.53 and install & run it and it will provide all the info.
