OE 5.5 locks up when switching identies

OE 5.5 locks up when switching identies

Running OE 5.5 on W98se. Problem seemed to coincide with when I switch to Avast, but not positive. I reformated C, reinstalled OE and Avast, but still has the problem. Ideas?
