Hello,

I've recently replaced a Solaris system used for faxing with an Dell XP Pro box, SP1 installed. Documents are submitted to the MS fax ok and the majority send but we keep getting the "fatal error" intermittantly which ties to the modem log message that the "DSR is low". When this error occurs the client can receive upto 30 copies of a single page fax (at which time only one failed attempt is recorded by MS fax - per MS tech support - they say it's not them causing the problem).

I've tried 3 different modems, 2 new USB's and the old Multitech serial from the Sun system. All modems record the "DSR is low" error in their logs.

The system reports all drivers (comm and modem) are up-to-date.

Are you using this as a fax server? Or just single stand alone computer that you are faxing from?

It is being used as a fax server for a single application that ties into my back end system on another server. This app does automatic faxing, emailing and EDI based on routing params in my database.

This app essentially "prints" an .rtf document to the MS fax on the box, no sharing, no users logged into this box, it is strickly for this app alone.

What I see is a possible issue is the modem type. USB modems in generally are not very good nor reliable. This is coming from experience. What I would suggest is getting yet another modem.

Look to get another external modem. I prefer using either a Hayes or Zoon 56k modem. You can get one very inexpensive on e-bay. Those are two of the brands that I have used when all others have failed.

Figured that part out yesterday. I attempted to connect to another one of my clients SCO boxes from the USB modem - it failed on 2 different phone lines and several speed and compression settings - and yet a 10 year old MultiTech v.34 modem connected fine every time.

Unfortunately, I've had the fatal errors occur with the external MultiTech too. Right now were changing the actual phone lines within the bldg to direct from the incoming panel to the modem room, whereas in the past it did a little run around adding about 50-60 feet on the run.

Thanks for assistance and if we get this figured I'll post what the problem turned out to be.

I was about to suggest that this *Could* be a telephone line issue.

however not being familiar with US terminology and phone line stats I could not help further.

In the UK I have often encountered problems when having to access an "outside" line, as it can often lead to a substantial delay in the call connecting.
The company I work for have direct lines for faxes now.
