Why would a motherboard need to be replaced?

I just found out that my computer's motherboard needs to be replaced. What causes the motherboard to go bad? This is the second computer that I have had that needed a new motherboard- the current one a 1 1/2 year old sony vaio laptop and a 5 year old gateway desktop. How can I prevent the motherboard from going out on my two other computers?

Motherboards have many parts built into them, and if any one of these parts go bad, the manufacturer will want to replace it, (Especially if you are out of warranty, as they can sell you overpriced replacements) Laptops are more prone to motherboard replacements, as just about everything is a part of it, desktops are less prone as they don't move as much, and more parts aren't integrated onto the board. How to avoid bad motherboards? Value quality over low price. Gateway isn't very high on the quality list, Companies such as Dell, HP, and Apple all make a solid product.
