COM Ports

How many COM ports are available in a PC? when i connected an internal modem into the system then it was connected as COM9 port. does it mean that there are minimum 9 COM ports? Are the COM ports are visible outside the PC? How can i detect the number of the COM ports that means which is COM0,COM1, .....?
