My disk drive wont work.
I can see it in control panel but it says it has a problem.
I can see it in bios. As maurice told a previous bloke to do on same sort of problem.
I had a friend look and he said a file was missing so windows could not see it.
So i tryed booting from disc. but the boot just goes straight to hard disk.
It wont let me repair the pc form disc.

Any help. ps this is not my pc i cant install software to get my wireless connection working till i fix CD arrgh

Can you explain a bit more please?

You say you can see the drive in control panel - do you mean that the system boots up ok? do you then go into Control Panel ->System -> Hardware and see the drive?

Is the drive in question a second drive?

Are the drives SATA or IDE?

I have just re-read your post and now realise you are talking about the CD/DVD drive.

Go into Control Panel -> System--> hardware and select the CD drive and uninstall it.

Reboot Windows and it should re-detect it. Windows has its own generic drivers for handling optical drives and doesn't need any extra files.

If the drive still does not appear to be working I would suggest that the drive has failed. The interface logic of the drive is working, hence it being seen in the BIOS. I suspect that the problem lies in the reading circuits. This is not uncommon and replacement DVD drives are cheap and easy to fit.
