I bought an Acer aspire laptop about a year ago, just recently it has developed a problem. the laptop will switch on and run normally for a little while but if you try to open anything which requires thinking about it will freeze then after about 8 seconds it will restart it's self, run a disk check then run normally until it is asked to open another programme.

At first i thought that maybe it could be the hard drive so i replaced it, and the problem persisted.

Then i thought maybe the RAM, so i tested both sticks (256 mb each) individually in slot 1 and the laptop did the same thing.

eventually i took it to a friend who knows a bit more than me about laptops, he said it could be the processor. so after a little while searching (for an AMD Athlon mobile 3000 skt754, which aparantly arent made anymore) i got a new one today. fitted it, booted the laptop up and the same problem occured.

If anyone could suggest what this problem may be i would appreciate it.

This sounds like it could be a couple issues. The first one is cooling, where the cpu fan is not working, if possible ensure the cooling on the cpu is working.

Before we get to the other issue, is this a clean installation of Windows? You said you replaced the hard drive, did you load a fresh copy of windows on it or did you use a disk imaging program?

Are you able to get into safe mode? If so does the machine do the same thing?

I thought the same thing, however the CPU fan IS working ok (i have cleaned out all the dust) and according to the AMD temperature thing that you can download, the processor is working at below 52 degrees constantly (if you block the fan it begins to rise slightly).

I am running XP home, this is a legitimate copy run from the original acer discs. in device manager NO hrdware issues are showing and the computer runs fine until i open iTunes or media player or any particularly complex internet page.
