Hi, feel free to use this.
Any business organisation that makes use of a LAN (Local Area Network) must make use of the following when that network has access to the Internet.
a) a Hardware Firewall. This is configured by the network administrator to say which inbound/outbound ports are open or not. It will have the facility to strip unwanted attachments from emails. Usually executable attachments such as .exe, .com, .scr etc type files will be stripped and replaced with a text file giving details of the attachment removed. The Firewall may well have the capability to filter out spam and viruse too. Te ability to block IP (Internet Protocol) addresses. Examples of hardware Firewalls are Watchguard Firebox and Fortigate Fortinet boxes.
b) centrally controlled anti-virus software. Each desktop will have anti-virus software installed and a central server will have an anti-virus management console which will monitor the status of each PC, push signature updates out etc.
c) specialised anti-virus and anti-spam software on the e-mail server. Most companies host their own e-mail server and so need to protect it.
For the Home User, most of whom connect to the Internet via Broadband, will need to take similar precautions albeit on a smaller scale. The Broadband router may come with a Firewall built in. If not a software Firewall needs to be installed on the PC. There are free ones available such as Comodo and ZoneAlarm. There are also combined Internet Security packages from software vendors such as McAfee, Kaspersky & Norton which include Firewall, anti-virus and anti-spam features in one package. For those on a tighter budget there are free anti-virus programs available such as AVG free edition.
