My computer kinda freezes after 20 of being turned on - ComputerProblems.org Free Computer Support & Technology Discussion

Within 20 minutes after I turn on my computer it kinda freezes, no matter what I'm doing, either if I'm on the web or if I'm just looking at some files in myy computer. I first noticed this when I was online because the page wouldn't load and it only said "looking up (the website)". The mouse is still functional and I can click on stuff but it won't open it and when I click on Start>>Shutdown the mouse turns into a clock and I can't click anything else. I have to do a hard shutdown by holding the power on key. I already did several malware and virus searches and nothing comes up, what else can I do to solve this? I've heard that I need to install the OS again but I was wondering if I could do something else besides that. Any help is greatly appreciate it.

My laptop is a Compaq Presario R3000
