I do not spend much time reading and writing on forums. I felt that my recent findings with antivirus software to important to not point out to others.

I have been using what I understand is the best or one of the best free antivirus programs. I always felt that it did a good job for me since it would often catch a virus or spyware before it got into my computer. I would go a step further and run the on line scans with about every brand that is available on a weekly basis. I also installed and used a demo antivirus programs from about all of the well know and most highly advertised companies out there.

None of the on line scans or use of the demo packages found anything in my computer. Of course this indicated to me that my free, Avast antivirus that I have been using for five years was doing as good of a job as any.

Then a couple of weeks ago a problem developed with both of my computers. I did an online scan with Bitdefender and found three virus Trojans that got past Avast. Then in removing these Trojans the registry of both computers was changed to the point that they would not function properly. I decided it easiest to completely reload the computers and start over.

So for the last few weeks I have been trying some of the so called best antivirus programs and as before none of them could top Avast. So in looking further for the best free anti virus program I read that none of the free programs will catch much of the “in the wild” and other viruses that could be out there. It also stated that all of the free programs are certified or what ever to catch and remove the known viruses making the best of them about 35% effective. That is a quote and not my statistics. I went a step farther to learn what the best is supposed to be.

I do not mind paying a fair price for the protection if it can really do better than what is for free software. So money is not an object, at least to a point.

In all of the research that I did I learned that the claim for number 2 spot is Kaspersky. The number 1 is supposed to be Avira Antivirus Premium. They also have an internet security package but with Windows Service Pack 3 an extra firewall does not seem to be needed for private home use where the computers are not turned on unless they are in use. I am also not very concerned with spam blockers since my internet service provider seems to do a good job of blocking that. Avira also has a free version of the antivirus program.

I had never heard of Avira before so I decided to take a look at it. Once I finally found a way to buy it with US Dollars I downloaded and installed the Avira Antivirus Premium demo version. If the price would have been ridiculous or if I could not buy it in the US then what would be the point in down loading and trying it out.

Once installed I ran the update and checked all of the settings to see if it was close to what I thought that I would want. I then ran a complete scan on my computer. This computer had only been reloaded two weeks ago and I have just run an online scan as well as the free antivirus program scan that I had installed.

I then ran the scan with the Avira package and it found 23 viruses in my computer and moved them to quarantine as I had set it to do. I then looked up information on the viruses to learn just what they are. They was not spyware but was listed as high risk Trojans that will cause a lot of damage. I then did the same to my other computer that is not used as much and found 4 viruses.

Needless to say I am very impressed. From what I could see at the Avira website the free version should be as effective in my situation as is the premium package that I plan to buy. I plan to buy it because it worked and because the premium version also has a spyware blocker.

If you get the pay for version the price is kind of tricky. In US Dollars the premium for a single computer is just under $25 a year. The next step up is for three computers that is just under $70 for a year. If you are like me and have two computers it would cost less to buy two of the single versions.

If you have an effective spyware blocker then maybe the free version would be satisfactory for your use.

There is no such thing as a perfect anti-virus program.

You need to be vigilant when using the Internet and utilise a number of anti-malware approaches.
